Visit Paris in paintings . . . . . . ... . .

. This long serie of impressionist paintings of Paris shows my daughter Colombine and her friend visiting Paris.
Characteristics of Impressionist painting include visible brushstrokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and unusual visual angles.
. These paintings have been created so you could bring back a wonderful souvenir from Paris or a whole collection.

Grand Palais :

Paris, it was 9 am in june 2007. Great blue sky with a nice NW wind.
Not a single tourist on the Champs Elysees, so I parked in the gardens of the "Petit Palais" and took a few photos of Colombine in the sharp light of the rising sun.
In front of her the "Grand Palais" (Grand Palace) and its beautiful glass ceiling.

The "Grand Palais" is a large glass exhibition hall that was built for the Paris Exhibition of 1900. It is located in the VIIIe arrondissement of Paris, France in the middle of the Champs Elysées.
Built at the same time as the Petit Palais and the Pont Alexandre III, the exterior of this massive palace combines an imposing Classical façade with a riot of Art Nouveau ironwork.

Bouquinistes :

Paris, 10 am in june 2007. We met Colombine's friend Rikki who were drinking a coffee Boulevard Saint Germain, beside the famous Brasserie Lipp. We parked close to Notre-Dame and went "rive gauche", Quai de Montebello, were the girls visited the "bouquinistes". Behind the trees, you see the towers of the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris.

The "bouquinistes" are second-hand booksellers. Their booth are 26,9 feet long. The first ones appeared in 1891 Quai Voltaire, today they are about 250 on the Seine's river banks. You will find them on the right banks from pont Marie to quai du Louvre or on the left bank from quai Malaquais to the quai de la Tournelle.

Bouquinistes and Notre Dame :

Engravings, lithos, old books or post-cards, Colombine and Rikki find make their shopping. In the freshness of the tree's shadows, they are quiet far from the crowd of Notre Dame.

The construction of Notre Dame of Paris began in 1163, during the reign of Louis VII. Bishop de Sully devoted most of his life and wealth to the cathedral's construction.
Construction of the west front, with its distinctive two towers, began circa 1200, before the nave had been completed. Between 1210 and 1220, the fourth architect oversaw the construction of the level with the rose window and the great halls beneath the towers. The towers were completed around 1245, and the cathedral's construction was finished around 1345

Sitting in front of Notre Dame : Rikki, sitted on the wall, and Colombine are having a little rest, looking at the barges and the pleasure steamers on the river Seine. In front of them on the Isle of "La Cité", the flying buttress of Notre Dame reflect the strong light of this summer day.

Notre Dame de Paris, translates as "Our Lady" from French, is a Gothic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Its main entrance looks to the west. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Paris and still used as a Roman Catholic cathedral. Notre Dame is considered as one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress. The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave. After the construction began and the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic) grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward.

On the banks of the Seine :

Climbing down a beautiful stone stairway, we arrived on the walk on the bank of the Seine. You can see one of the barges in foreground.

On the Seine, you can see barges, "bateaux-mouches", these boats to visit Paris from the River and a few "Bateau-bus" .
Outside of Paris, a few old barges or yachtsare used as permanent houses. Most of them are parked along the banks illegally.
If you are fond of barges, go and visit Bougival very closed to Paris. It is the kingdom of the barges. One is a church, the other one a Museum, or a restaurant. A place to see.

Pont Saint Michel :

On the "Saint Michael Bridge" (Pont St Michel in French), the girls take a little rest under the sun. Behind them on the left bank of the Seine, you can see the Place St Michel and its fountain. A place where all the youth meet easily as the heart of the Latin quarter.

Central axis of the Quartier Latin, the Boulevard Saint Michel is a hotbed of student life. Tourism is also a major commercial focus of the street and designer shops have gradually evicted many small bookshops.
In slang, the boulevard is sometimes called the Boul'Mich.

A Jack Russell in Paris :

Could I show you Paris without any image of a dog ? Of course not!
While we were walking on the bank of the Seine in the Ile de la Cité, a man was taking his 2 jack russell for a walk. So I took a few snapshot to paint them.

Did you know that there are 200.000 dogs in Paris ?
It has been for long a real problem, mostly for foreigners or mostly, for their shoes !
did you read "God save la France" author Clarke ? So funny ! French men are supposed to have a third eye to avoid to walk in "it" ... lol
It is less and less true. We are making big efforts.

Pont Neuf :

On the river banks, Colombine and Rikki walked all around the Ile de la Cite. Behind them, you can see the "Pont Neuf" (New Bridge), the oldest bridge in Paris.

Pont Neuf:
King Henri III laid its first stone in 1578. Delayed by the Wars of Religion, it was completed under the reign of Henri IV, who inaugurated it in 1607. Pont Neuf is constructed as a series of many short arch bridges, as most bridges of that time were built, following Roman precedents.
The bridge link the "right bank" to the "left bank" at the western end or the "Ile de la Cite"

On the river banks, Colombine and Rikki walked all around the Ile de la Cite. Behind them, you can see the "Pont Neuf" (New Bridge), the oldest bridge in Paris.
